407 East 12th Street; 407-409 East 12th Street | Block : 440 | Lot #7502
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story building was originally erected as a one-story store in 1945. It was raised to two stories in 1947 for a showroom space. During an alteration in 2003, it was raised to the current height and converted into a residential building. The present facade features a two-story high entrance opening, a cornice above the fifth story, rectangular lintels, and sills.
At the rear is an adjoining structure which is angled as a result of Stuyvesant Street which formerly extended east from its present-day location and at a thirty-plus degree angle to the New York City grid (see the Off Grid under additional resources).
This was previously Lots 55 & 56, and was converted to Lot 7502 in 2003.
