Description & Building Alterations
Three separate buildings originally occupied what is now Lot 7501. No. 72 was constructed in 1873 and the architect was William Jose. Nos 74 & 76 were constructed between 1871 and 1874 and the architect(s) is unknown.
Tax records show that the buildings at No. 74 and No. 76 East 3rd Street were single houses with five stories and a basement. Today, only two of the three buildings constructed in the 1870s are still standing. At some point between the 1960s and 1980s, the five story building at No. 76 East 3rd Street was demolished. Lot 7501 refers to the two buildings at 72-74 East 3rd Street.
The first floor facade of No. 72 was altered in 1906 to incorporate a storefront, and the fire escape was installed in 1914. The two remaining buildings feature bracketed and modillioned cornices and original window lintels. At some point, the stoop at No. 74 was removed and the entrance was moved from the first floor to a side gate located on the site of the demolished building at No. 76. The old entryway was filled in with brick.
No. 74 features molded window lintels with ornaments, molded sills supported by brackets, and an original bracketed galvanized-iron cornice with elaborate decorations and a segmental-arched pediment at the center.
