235 East 12th Street | Block : 468 | Lot #44
Description & Building Alterations
This five story building was constructed in 1878. The once brownstone building housed ten families, two per floor, and was possibly the sister building of 237 East 12th Street. Between 1960 and 1962, each two-apartment floor was converted into four apartments. It is likely that the facade – which would have previously been three or four bays wide, with brownstone lintels and sills, a raised-stoop entrance and a projecting brownstone entryway – was replaced with this brick facade during the remodeling. The large window openings, arranged two per floor, were typical of the time. The metal cornice was also removed at this time.
