624 East 6th Street | Block : 387 | Lot #121-122
Description & Building Alterations
Lot 121 and 122 are together the 6BC Botanical Garden, a Green Thumb project of the New York City Parks Department.
The previous building on the west side of the garden was constructed in 1907, adjacent to the building at 620 East 6th Street. The building was also six stories tall and likely shared very similar façade features because they were constructed under the same building permit by the same owner and architect. A tenement building on the east side of the garden, on lot 122, was constructed in 1898 by architects Horenburger & Straub to house 33 families. In 1942, a service flag was hung from the building across East 6thStreet, and remained there for the remainder of World War II.
There are no records in the archives or on the Department of Buildings website for either building that indicate when the buildings were demolished, but tax photos indicate that both lots were vacant by the 1980s.
