Description & Building Alterations

This five-story tenement was built in 1863 by the heirs of Stephen Whitney, who purchased many properties on this block in 1825, including the buildings next to it. This lot was passed down to Caroline Whitney, who initiated the construction of this building.

The facade of this stripped Italianate building has been reconfigured, though the brick frieze at the top of the building is still visible. The original elements are visible in the 1980s tax photo (see sidebar). The original cornice has been removed and the entrance door has been replaced.
