Description & Building Alterations

This building was originally constructed in 1855 as three of six 4-story tenement buildings that ran from No. 29 Second Avenue to the corner of East 1st Street (No. 29 is the only one of the row that has maintained its original height and massing).

In 1913, the three 4-story buildings were combined and converted to a store, moving picture theater & lofts; this is presumably the year in which the building acquired its current facade. In 1930, the first floor was being used as a museum, and in 1937 it was converted to a store with meeting rooms above. The top floor became residential in 1961, according to a Certificate of Occupancy.
