Description & Building Alterations

This four-bay wide, six-story tenement was built in 1896 for two stores and 22 families, designed by George Frederick Pelham. The building is also the longtime home of John Holmstrom, co-founder of Punk Magazine. Punk was the first magazine to extensively cover the CBGB music scene in the mid-to-late 1970s, including bands like the Ramones, Television, and Blondie.  While Punk was not the first to use the term, the magazine popularized the use of the term to describe the music, scene, and DIY attitude which emanated from the area at the time.

The present facade features foliated beltcourses, molded window lintels, and round-arched window openings at the fifth story. It appears that the original roof cornice and the entrance enframement have been removed, and the storefront reconfigured.
