135-139 Avenue A | Block : 436 | Lot #30
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story apartment building was originally a group of Old Law tenements erected in 1873; the facades were likely remodeled in 1938 when these tenements were combined into one building.
According to this 1938 alteration permit, there were three five-story Old Law tenements at the rear of these lots. At that time, one was demolished and the other two were shortened to three stories. These two surviving structures were then combined with the three Old Law tenements at the front of these lots to form “modern” two-room apartments. The newly combined building was given a common public hall accessed through the 135 Avenue A entrance. Stores also occupied the ground floor.
