Description & Building Alterations

No. 643 East 6th Street was built in conjunction with the building to its east, 645 East 6th Street. Along with its neighbor, the building was rehabilitated in 1986 by the New York City Housing Authority.  It is six stories in height and six bays wide.  It is clad in light colored brick with classically inspired stone ornament at the window crowns and surrounds.  Brick pilasters with Corinthian capitals span three through five and there is a modillioned cornice.  The storefront has been modernized.

The building originally had stores on the ground floor, but today there are apartments. Columns on the ground floor can still be seen where the original storefronts may have been.
