Description & Building Alterations

Lots 40 and 41, each originally containing a tenement building, were combined to create the current playground, which is owned by the New York City Housing Authority.

The tenement previously on lot 40 was constructed in 1873. The new building application indicates that a building was standing on neighboring lot 41, 639 East 6th Street, but there are no original building permits on file for that structure. According to a 1940’s tax photo, the two buildings were five stories tall, each four bays wide, with simple window trim and metal cornices. The buildings also had glass storefronts. No. 641 East 6th Street on lot 40 was demolished in 1968, and while there is no demolition permit on file for the neighboring building, it was likely demolished around the same time. By the time a tax photo was taken ca. 1985, lot 41 was vacant.
