627 East 6th Street | Block : 389 | Lot #47
Description & Building Alterations
This structure is a pre-law tenement constructed in 1877 along with six other buildings from 619 to 629 East 6th Street. Owned by prominent brewer and large real-estate owner David Jones, the nearly identical tenements were built on the site of “Jones’s Brewery,” which burned in 1875. This building is five stories in height and its first floor has been stripped of historic detail and modernized. The upper stories are four bays and the windows have identical ornamental lintels and sills, although the sills of the windows at the second floor have been removed. The metal cornice features dentils, modillions, and raised panels at the frieze between the heavily articulated brackets. The commercial ground floor has no visible stonework, like some of the neighboring buildings.
The building has a central entrance with storefronts on either side. A 1903 building application details the renovation of the storefronts on the ground floor and at the cellar level. A 1940’s tax photo shows a galvanized iron cornice decorating the storefront.
