Description & Building Alterations

No. 629 East 6th Street was constructed along with six tenements to its west in 1877. The buildings were identical and owned by prominent brewer and large real-estate owner David Jones, who had owned a brewery complex on the property until it burned in 1875. This building is five stories in height and its first floor has been stripped of historic detail and modernized, with the exception of the remnants of some cast iron columns. The upper stories are four bays and the windows have identical ornamental lintels and sills, although the sills of the windows at the second floor have been removed. The metal cornice features dentils, modillions, and raised panels at the frieze between the heavily articulated brackets. The commercial ground floor has no visible stonework, like some of the neighboring buildings.

Although it is unclear whether the building was constructed with retail space on the ground floor, it is clear that there was once a storefront, based on the framing on the ground floor and the 1940’s tax photos. Today the ground floor is classified as commercial space, and there is one apartment on each of the upper floors.
