Description & Building Alterations
This is a vacant lot as of February 2025. It is anticipated that a new building will be constructed spanning this and the adjacent lots on either side, but plans have yet to be filed with the NYC Department of Buildings.
Demolished in 2024, the previous building on this lot was a four-story brick row house, built at the same time as Nos. 60 and 58 Third Avenue (1838-39). Each was built as a three-story building and had a fourth story added around the turn of the 20th century. The original owner of No. 62 was Caleb Bartlett.
Until 2016, this building housed the New York Central Art Supply, a family-run business for over a century. Founded in 1905 by Benjamin Steinberg, the art store supplied artists such as Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Lichtenstein. As a young child in 1877, James T. Lee, grandfather of the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and his parents lived in this building. James T. Lee became a prolific developer of New York City buildings.
