Description & Building Alterations

Lot 52 contains a one-story, brick, utilitarian garage building completed in the 1960’s. There is neither a demolition permit for the previous structure, nor a new building permit for the garage.

There is, however, an alteration permit dated 1961 stating the existing use and the proposed occupancy. The earlier structure was a tenement with eight families and stores on the ground floor. The proposed occupancy was a garage for trucks and manufacturing, with an office on the mezzanine level. Tax photos from the 1940’s show the earlier building, five stories tall, although shorter than its five-story neighbors, with a launderette on the ground floor and a pedimented cornice.
