Description & Building Alterations

Alterations are currently underway to convert this one story garage into a six story apartment building. The addition was designed by DXA Studio Architecture, PPLC.

Lot 51 contains a one-story, garage and storage building, constructed in 1946. At one time, there was a window between the two doors that has been bricked over. Previous to the garages, this lot contained a building that was nearly identical to 621-629 East 6^th Street, all constructed in 1877. In a tax photo taken just before the building’s 1940 demolition, the building shared architectural details with 621 East 6^th Street and there were stores on the ground floor.

What is the Building Blocks Project

The site explores the area generally considered today as the East Village: from a northern border of 14th Street to a southern border of Houston Street, Avenue D in the east to 4th Avenue/the Bowery to the west.
