53 Avenue D | Block : 374 | Lot #36
Description & Building Alterations
Lot 36 consists of a one story brick building whose façade is dominated by a metal rolling gate. 19th Century tax records indicate that there was a 3 story building on this lot circa 1880. Tax photos circa 1940 show that there was a three story row house with a metal cornice. In the 1950’s the three story building was used as a synagogue for Congregation Ohav Zedak led by Rabbi Joseph Myer. In 1967, the building was converted to commercial and residential use with a glass, mirror and picture frame store on the first floor and an apartment above. Tax photos circa 1980 show the building as it appears today, only one story tall.
