528 East 5th Street | Block : 400 | Lot #20
Description & Building Alterations
Built in 1846 as part of a row of houses similar to its neighbor, No. 526, No. 528 was drastically remodeled around the 1930s. By 1937 a repair lists the building as five stories, likely counting the basement, as it also held apartments. The altered building brought the facade forward and eliminated the raised-stoop entrance. The window details and cornice were also removed, but decoration was achieved by laying the brick in patterns both around the windows and as spandrel details. With this major alteration, the building went from housing about four families to housing approximately 22 families on four floors, with storage in the cellar.
