42 Second Avenue | Block : 444 | Lot #3
Description & Building Alterations
This three-and-a-half story light gray brick building was constructed in 1844-45 by owner R. A. Byrne. In the early 20th century, the building served as the abode of the Tammany Club of the Tenth Assembly District and the headquarters of Sheriff Julius Harburger. The neighborhood political club provided useful services to its constituents, such as fixing a traffic light or lobbying for a new neighborhood school, and expected their loyalty in return on election day.
The building features a peaked roof and little ornamentation. The half story basement is visible from the street. A major alteration to the facade occurred sometime between 1942 and 1967, when the cornice, window lintels and sills were removed, the present peaked roof line was adopted, and the entrance was moved from the left bay to slightly off center with a pedimented door hood.
