42 Avenue B | Block : 399 | Lot #36
Description & Building Alterations
Built as a pair of buildings, No. 42 and its neighbor to the south, No. 40, were each designed by William Jose in 1874 to house eight families, two per floor, over ground-floor shops. The Neo-Grec brownstone window lintels and sills are intact on most openings, but several windows have been converted to doorways, causing removal of the triangular pediments on the two outer window bays on the second floor. The raised stoop entrance and original pressed-metal cornice has also been removed.
