Description & Building Alterations

Built 1839-40, 44 Avenue B began as a three-story building but was added to in 1869, making it four stories.  This conversion, by architect John Walch for owner Jacob Ganter, made the building officially a tenement, since it could now house three families.  Each family had a floor, and the first floor and basement were used for stores.  Up until this change, there were two families living above stores on the first floor.  The cornice and brownstone window lintels and sills are likely from the 1869 renovation.  The building would have once had a decorative raised-stoop entrance.  The raised stoop could have been removed as early as the 1890s, making the basement level the first floor.
