This lot is now the Lower East Side Playground (Open Road Park) established in 1990 as a schoolyard and community plaza, and is a popular skate spot. Previously on site was a one-story garage demolished in 1986. One can see what the lot looked like after demolition and before the establishment of the park in 1980s tax photos.

What is the Building Blocks Project

The site explores the area generally considered today as the East Village: from a northern border of 14th Street to a southern border of Houston Street, Avenue D in the east to 4th Avenue/the Bowery to the west. Or take one of the many guided tours on the site, curated by a collection of organizations and experts from the neighborhood. See how they experience the neighborhood.
