Description & Building Alterations

This irregular lot is a combination of several lots that front East 10th Street, East 112th Street and Avenue C.  The buildings that occupy this lot are a series of post-modern townhouse-style apartments.  Their historicised design and details suggest that these buildings fit with the historic character of the neighborhood.  These buildings feature red brick walls, stone quoins in addition to a green aluminum cornice.  While these details might seem historically accurate, these are all modern details applied to the new building.  These buildings replaced several previous buildings, most of which seem to have been demolished in the 1980s.  One of the demolished buildings at 383 East 10th Street once housed the Peace Eye Bookstore, a center of counter-culture.  The bookstore was owned by Tuli Kupferberg and Ed Sanders, members of the Fugs, an East Village folk-rock group known for their radical political views.
