Description & Building Alterations

This row house with Flemish Bond brickwork was built with its neighbor at 324 East 3rd Street. They were originally two separate lots (34 & 35), but were merged to just 34 in 1901 when interior partitions were removed to connect both buildings. The owner of the property in 1900, John G. Wendel, was a descendant of General David Wendel, known as “Fighting Dave” in the Revolutionary War. John Wendel prided himself first on his American citizenship and second on the fact that he was born and lived all of his life in New York City. He was a huge landholder in the city; his property values amounted to $30,000,000.  Furthermore, he was an associate and in-law of John Jacob Astor. Mr. Wendel passed away in 1914.

In 1950, both rear brick walls were removed to add an extension. The metal cornice, the stone stoops, and the two brick chimneys were removed as well.
