Description & Building Alterations

This six story building is comprised of two heavily-altered old-law tenements with a central dumbbell court. The buildings appear to have been joined in 1962. Clara Lemlich, the 23-year-old  garment worker and leader of the New York shirtwaist strike of 1909, lived at 278 East 3rd Street before it was combined into the present building.
