Description & Building Alterations

No. 279 East 4th Street is an Old Law Tenement building constructed in 1900 along with its identical neighbor at 277 East 4th Street.  It is six stories in height, four bays wide and has a dumb bell plan.  It is clad in stucco with limestone ornament expressed in a classical vocabulary.  The modillioned cornice has swags at the frieze.  There are string courses running below the windows and a centered entry.

The six-story structure retains much of its original detail including a cornice at the top and rusticated stone elements around upper story windows. Although there were once stores on the ground floor, it appears that the original building entrances have been retained as well. Currently the building has twelve apartment units and is being used by East 4th Street Rehab and owned by the City of New York.
