Description & Building Alterations

This five-story pre-law tenement building at 27 Avenue C was constructed in 1866 and seems to have replaced a three-story woodframe structure. The rear building dates to 1853 and was owned by Hugh Henning. The brick building has a plain façade and little ornamentation. Newer brick can be seen above and below the windows, where decorative lintels and sills once existed. The building’s cornice has been removed. The ground floor has consistently been a retail space since it was built and the upper floors have held apartments.
