Description & Building Alterations
This four-bay wide, five-story brick tenement was originally erected in 1870 and designed by Julius Boekell. It replaced a row house built in 1838-39, along with the buildings at 267-273 East 10th Street. The present facade features bracketed cornice with frieze, molded window lintels with decorative details, triangular pediments above lintels at second story, engaged pilasters at storefront, and molded cornice above first story.
Charles “Lucky” Luciano, considered the father of modern organized crime in America, grew up in apartment five of 265 East 10th Street. Luciano was born Salvatore Lucania on November 24, 1897 in Sicily, Italy. As a mafia boss, he was especially known for emphasizing the importance of omertà, or oath of silence.
