Description & Building Alterations

Tax records indicate that this building was constructed circa 1866-67 along with the adjacent building at 236 East 7th Street.  Though its cornice has been removed and its ground floor refaced, the building retains its hooded windows and fenestration pattern that connect it to the next door building.  In 1904 the owner Nanette Weber of 54 West 95th Street had the outhouses removed and installed interior water closets to the building which was occupied as a 10 family tenement.  In 1906 permits were filed by Morris Melitzer to enlarge the upper windows and construct to new first floor storefronts.  A 1962 certificate of occupancy indicated that the building accommodated 20 apartments (4 on each floor).
