Description & Building Alterations

This six-story, brick-faced apartment building was constructed in 2004. It sits on land that once consisted of lots 55 and 56, but they have since been merged into one lot (56).

The building originally on former lot 55, at 231 East 3rd Street, was a five-story Old Law Tenement with a store on the first floor and eight families on the upper stories. A tax photograph of the building was taken a few years before it was demolished in 1989 and shows the building with boarded windows.

The building on former lot 56, at 229 East 3rd Street, was constructed in 1899 by architect Michael Bernstein. It was an Old Law Tenement six stories tall housing 33 families. It is unknown when the tenement was demolished, except that it was after the 1980’s tax photo was taken.
