Description & Building Alterations

According to tax records, 222 East 7th Street can be dated to 1845. A tenement was possibly its original purpose, but it is not until 1903, the date of the earliest alteration permit, that its use as such can be confirmed.

There were three families and a store occupying the building at that time, and there was also a back building where eight families lived (demolished in 1941). In a 1940’s tax photo, the building was three bays wide and three stories tall with an above-ground basement. The roof was flat and there was a cornice at the top of the building. The basement contained a storefront, and what is now the second floor was accessed by a stoop. Since then the façade has been altered significantly. Today it has an asymmetrical, two-bay design, a partial parapet wall at the left side, and a shingled, half-angled roof on the right. It also underwent major interior renovations in 2008, when the three apartments were converted into a single residential unit.
