Description & Building Alterations

No. 220 East 7th Street, constructed along with its identical neighbors to the west, was built by architect Peter Tostevin in 1876.

This five story, four bay structure is clad in brick and has decorative lintels and sills at the windows.  The cornice has been removed and the storefront has been modernized.  The building originally had ten apartments, but by 1904, the ground floor had been altered to contain retail space as well. After falling into disrepair and becoming vacant, the building was rehabilitated in the late 1980’s and is now called Access House. It is owned by a non-profit agency named Community Access, and serves as a residence for people with psychiatric disabilities transitioning into independent living.
