221 East 12th Street | Block : 468 | Lot #51
Description & Building Alterations
Likely built as one of a series of row houses on this street, 221 East 12th Street was probably designed in a transitional style between Greek Revival and Italianate. All that remains of the original details is the cornice; the windows have been changed and bricked over in the middle, the brownstone lintels have been shaved, and the entire facade has been stuccoed over. While there is a raised-stoop entrance, it is not original and the entryway surround has been removed.
By the mid-1920s the five story building was operating as a boarding house, with furnished rooms available for rent. In 1970 it was converted into apartments with three per floor on the upper floors.
