218 East 13th Street | Block : 468 | Lot #18
Description & Building Alterations
This four-story building was built as part of a row of brownstone row houses that began at 206 East 13th Street and stretched eastward down the block ending at 220 East 13th Street. As one of only four surviving buildings left from that development, 218 East 13th Street retains little of its original Italianate details. The original brownstone of the facade has been replaced with brick and the brownstone window lintels, sills and entry surround have all been stripped. The pressed-metal cornice is all that remains of the 19th century ornamentation. The building was originally a single-family home that was converted into apartments as the neighborhood and housing demands shifted.
