212 East 7th Street | Block : 389 | Lot #24
Description & Building Alterations
Prior to the construction of the current building, this lot contained a new law tenement building that was constructed in 1903 by architect George Frederick Pelham.
A portion of the building can be seen in a 1940’s tax photo of lot 26, and it appears to be very similar to its neighbor at 208 East 7th Street, which was constructed in the same year. A vacate order from 1974 indicates that the building was in terrible condition at that time, posing myriad hazards to the public, and was demolished within ten years. A few of the highlights included: fire damage to the upper three stories, broken and missing windows, large areas of the roof missing, the cornice hanging from the roof and necessitating police barricades, and no gas or water supply to occupied apartments. The current five-story building was constructed in 2008, contains 18 residential units and is owned by the New York City Housing Authority.
