201 Second Avenue | Block : 468 | Lot #37
Description & Building Alterations
Originally constructed as a private dwelling for one family, this five story building has seen an array of uses over the years – a boarding house, restaurant, beauty parlor, cabaret, offices, apartments, a deli, and an office for Chinese medicine – each with attendant alterations that leave it in its present condition.
The raised-stoop entry and door surround were removed in 1933, but the proportions of the parlor floor windows were retained, giving the now second floor and off-balanced appearance. The stone lintels and sills were shaved down and the entire facade painted, making the building appear flatter than its original design. The only intact detail that remains is the metal cornice.
