122 Avenue C | Block : 377 | Lot #7
Description & Building Alterations
Tax records indicate that this building, originally a single-family rowhouse with a stoop, was constructed around 1848. It likely had Greek Revival features similar to no. 120 next door, but the facade has been completely re-clad in brick veneer at some point in the 20th century. During that alteration, the cornice was removed and the top floor was raised.
In 1915 owner Charles Lang of 52 East 91st Street altered the interior partitions and constructed new water closets for the building which, at that time, housed a store and tenements. By 1953 the upper floors were vacant and the first floor was occupied by a butcher shop.
* The handwritten name in the original tax record is difficult to read; this is our best guess.
