Description & Building Alterations

This building was constructed prior to 1853 and tax records show that between 1868 and 1869 it was raised from 3 stories to 4 stories. The building originally housed one dwelling and a ground floor store and workshop.

An alteration statement from a date prior to 1899 indicates that the building was extended approximately six feet to the front, where the current building line exists. The building was altered in 1899 to house three families in the upper stories, and again in the 1920s to serve as a store and furniture showroom. Tax photos from the 1940s show that the façade was three bays wide with a heavy cornice and window trim. The photo also shows an applied storefront, which no longer exists. The 1980s tax photo indicates the building retained its three bays until that time, in addition to the heavy cornice. Today the building contains a restaurant on the first floor and apartments above. The facade features simple lintels and sills, in addition to a simple non-original denticulated cornice with rectangular panels in the frieze.
