Description & Building Alterations

Before this condominium (and Lower East Side Girls Club) building was constructed, the lot and its neighbors at 97-99 Avenue D and 105 Avenue D had been vacant. Other lots were combined (402 East 8th St. and 277E. 7th St.) when the condo was built, and the property is now referred to as 101 Avenue D. On the first three floors, the architect used a mix of different materials like glass, aluminum, and oxidized steel. On the fourth floor and above, brick veneer and glass windows were used in the residential part of the building.

97-99 Avenue D was once occupied by a six-story brick Old Law tenement constructed in 1901 and designed by George Frederick Pelham. It held 24 families with a store on the ground level. Based on the 1980s tax photo (see side bar), the building had been demolished and the lot was vacant by that time.

101 Avenue D was occupied by a five story brick tenement built in 1876, owned by George Bardes and designed by Julius Boekell. It was demolished in 1990. A separate four-story building was located at the rear of the property, and it was likely demolished at the same time. The 1980s tax photo (see side bar) shows what this former 19th century front building looked like.

105 Avenue D once held a six-story (with cellar) brick and stone New Law tenement constructed in 1903 to the designs of George Frederick Pelham. The property was owned by Lena Michelson of 136 Avenue D. The tenement originally housed two families on the first floor and four families per floor on the second through sixth floors. This building is visible in the 1980s tax photo (see side bar) and was also likely demolished in 1990.
