Description & Building Alterations

Though altered, this building retains enough of its character defining features to identify it as a mid-to-late 19th century Greek Revival row house. The three story, three bay wide brick building features simple molded window lintels and sills and a bracketed cornice.

Early records from the Department of Buildings date to 1905 when owner Catherine Glock of 71 Jefferson Avenue in Brooklyn altered the interior and rear elevation of the building that was described as a three story brick tenement occupied by four families.  In 1906 Ms. Glock had relocated to Elizabeth, New Jersey and was renting the basement of the building on East 4th Street as a store.  Currently, the building is part of the operations of Community Access, a nonprofit organization focused on providing “an intensive, structured living environment to help people move from shelters and hospitals into the community.” The building houses shared common spaces and dormitory style rooms for twelve adults.
