East Village Building Blocks

340 East 4th Street (Building 2) | Block : 373 | Lot #23

  • Building Date : 1899
  • Original Use : Residential
  • Original Owner : Adolf Wandel
  • Original Architect : Samuel Sass

Description & Building Alterations

This five-story brick tenement formerly stood on Lot 25, which was later demapped and consolidated with neighboring Lot 23. It was constructed simultaneously with an identical tenement at Lot 26 (344 East 4th).

Like its younger conjoined sibling to the north, this building remains almost completely intact. The one major exception is the front door, which was filled with stone in 1937 and “new doors [were] cut”, which makes this the likeliest period in which 340 and 344 East 4th on lots 23 through 25 were combined to form one building on one lot at one address.

This building’s address was 342 East 4th Street before it was combined with the neighboring tenement building at 340 East 4th.
