96 St. Mark’s Place | Block : 435 | Lot #12
Description & Building Alterations
This five-story with basement old-law tenement was built along with its neighboring building at 98 St. Mark’s Place. The two structures were designed by architects Schneider & Herter, to accommodate 21 families in all.
The twin tenements were featured on the cover for Led Zeppelin’s album “Physical Graffiti” (see Village Preservation to the right). In 1981 The Rolling Stones shot the video “Waiting on a Friend” here, in which Mick Jagger and Keith Richards meet at the stoop.
The two buildings share almost identical facades. No. 96 features belt-courses throughout the facade, a round-arched entrance portico with columns supporting a bracketed entablature and a figural keystone, decorative segmental-arched window enframements at first story, round-arched window openings with figural keystones at second stories, molded window lintels at third story, decorative panels between fourth and fifth story, and engaged pilasters flanking two center bays on the top floor supporting a segmental arch with ornate tympanum. The stepped parapet appears to be a later addition.
