94 Avenue B; 545 East 6th Street | Block : 402 | Lot #43
Description & Building Alterations
Tax assessment records show house here as early as 1848 and the 1853 map shows it as a masonry residence with a store on the first floor. In looking at the subsequent maps, it is probably the same building by 1933 which had its upper tree stories removed according to a demo permit from that year.
A map of East Village art galleries from 1983 (see sidebar) shows that the Pat Hearn Gallery was at this location.
The building’s current appearance is due to an illegal addition that was given a violation in 2004 mandating that the addition be removed or legalized. The first floor storefront is a more modern green enclosure for a corner delicatessen. Some of the original one story building is visible about the store’s awning. Much of the second floor is obscured by a fence on the terrace above the first floor on the avenue facade. The third story windows are awkwardly proportioned arched windows. Portions of this facade is finished in yellow stucco while the rest of the building is red brick. The street face is all red brick with the window bays, the center of which has an arched window on the second and their floors.
