Description & Building Alterations

This three-story brick building with a raised basement was constructed as a private row house. As far back as 1837, tax records indicate that this house was owned by Samuel Secor. However, in 1905 the residential use was changed to lofts and light manufacturing. This building housed Tribal Arts Gallery for many years and was part of the 10th Street gallery scene. It also housed the Off-Bowery Theater with performances by the New York Poets Theatre during the early 1960s. As of 2012, the brick was painted and refaced with Neo-Grec detailing, which was mainly shown in the carved stone between the second and third stories. In the late 2010s, it was refaced with modern cladding.
