82 East 10th Street | Block : 555 | Lot #20
Description & Building Alterations
Lot 20 (82 East 10th Street) was formerly occupied by a red brick, Italianate row house, built as a private residence for John A. Stansbury. It was constructed around 1837 and features classical elements and simple lintels. The bracketed cornice was added in 1881. Some of the brick has been replaced, however much of the detailing is original. In 1928, Lot 20 housed a carpenter’s shop with light manufacturing. After this time, according to Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York blog, it may have held the Hilda Carmel Gallery where many famous expressionist painters, such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Willem de Kooning, showcased their work. It formerly housed the gallery Quandam, which specialized in old etchings and engravings.
In 2016, a ten-story concrete residential building was approved for construction on this lot. Today, the Italiante row house has been demolished for a luxury condo combined with the former lots of 76-80 East 10th Street and 71-73 Fourth Avenue.
