Description & Building Alterations

This large, x-shaped apartment building was constructed in 1957 as The Greenwich Arms. It replaced a number of three-to-four story 19th-century row houses and commercial buildings, including 85 Fourth Avenue where artist Willem de Kooning lived in a loft in the 1940s and ’50s. Under historic photos, you can see all of the former row houses via 1940s tax photos, nine buildings between 75-91 Fourth Avenue, two buildings between 75-79 East 10 Street (75 East 10th St. missing), and four buildings between 100-110 East 11 Street (100 East 11th missing).
