  • Original Use : Residential
  • Original Owner : New York City Housing Authority

Description & Building Alterations

Known by the NYC Housing Authority as “Lower East Side III,” this lot spans across the middle of the block from East 9th Street to East 8th Street, with one long building on each side (2 total) facing an inner court.  The buildings are modern, made of red brick.  Contrary to most other NYCHA projects in the East Village and throughout New York, mostly built prior to the 1970’s, this one tries to some degree to mimic the traditional building forms in the neighborhood, with four story structures with stoops and areaways, and divided into smaller segments which roughly correspond to the width of a traditional tenement or rowhouse.
