717 East 9th Street; 717-721 East 9th Street | Block : 379 | Lot #53
Description & Building Alterations
717 East 9th Street is a new building constructed circa 2009. The current building sits on four lots that originally housed three buildings but sat vacant for several decades.
Lot 53, the eastern most part of the new lot, was originally a 5-story Pre-Law tenement likely built circa 1870s. Little is known about this building, but its use and appearance, like most of the eastern portion of the block, changed over the years. By 1944 when it was slated for demolition, the upper floor had been removed bringing it down to a 4-story building. According to maps, this floor removal happened sometime between 1930 and 1944…
The building on tax lot 54 took up two lots, 54 and 55. It was a New-Law Tenement built in 1903 by Horenburger & Straub for Simon Steiner. The tenement was a 6-story brick building with 28 families and shops on first floor. By 1986 the building was demolished and the lot remained vacant.
Lot 56, the western most portion of this lot, was originally an Old-Law Tenement built in 1898. The 6-story brick building was designed by George Frederick Pelham for Julius and Max Weinstein. It housed 15 families plus a janitor and had 2 stores in the partially-raised basement. In 1970 a fire destroyed the vacant apartments in the building and the subsequent water damage made the few occupied apartments unlivable and it was scheduled for demolition.
