Description & Building Alterations

Prior to the construction of the present building in 2004 a large, six story tenement for 39 families was erected at 713-717 East 6^th Street in 1906 by Kotzen Realty Co. of 203 Henry Street using the services of the architectural firm of Bernstein & Bernstein of 24 East 23^rd Street.

In 1947 the first floor stores were modified to allow four stores instead of two.

In 1902 a 24 family tenement (709-711 east 6^th Street) was built on part of this lot by Spielberger & Steiner of 66 St. Marks Place. Designed by architect M. Bernstein of 111 Broadway two buildings were demolished to make way for this tenement.

Another six story tenement building which once stood at No. 705 was built in 1906 by Joseph Wolkrunbery of 96 Avenue C, also using the services of architects Bernstein & Bernstein.

What is the Building Blocks Project
