Description & Building Alterations
Prior to the construction of this modern movie theater, a gorgeous structure built by James Renwick in 1869 stood here. Renwick, famous for his designs of Grace Church and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, was commissioned by the City to design no. 66 Third Avenue as the headquarters of the New York City Department of Public Charities and Corrections. The building had a mansard roof and a Neo-Grec style facade. In 1917, the mansard roof was removed when the building was converted to a barn and garage.
