633 East 6th Street | Block : 389 | Lot #44
Description & Building Alterations
Lot 44 was constructed in 1877, along with the neighboring six buildings. The building is a pre-law tenement that originally housed eight families and used the first floor for storage. It is five stories in height with a rusticated, stone clad, first floor with three bays. The entry is centered and all three openings are arched with radiating voussoirs. The upper stories are four bays and the windows have identical ornamental sills and curved lintels. The metal cornice features dentils, modillions, and raised panels at the frieze between the heavily articulated brackets. The non-commercial ground floor displays rusticated stonework.
The building was owned by prominent brewer and large real-estate owner David Jones and is on the site of what was once “Jones’ Brewery.” Jones constructed seven tenements on East 6th Street after a fire destroyed the brewery in 1875. The ground floor façade dates to the 1940’s at least.
